The Society’s aims are:
-
To reduce the number of people being exposed to asbestos and future incidences of asbestos related disease in the Australian community.
-
To help those who have been affected by asbestos.
-
To help and provide support to sufferers of asbestos related disease, their carers, families and friends throughout Queensland.
-
To promote awareness about the dangers of asbestos exposure especially given the large amounts of asbestos still present in our environment.
-
To address the physical, emotional and welfare needs of individuals at the time they are diagnosed with an asbestos related disease.
To achieve these aims the Society:
-
provides moral and emotional support to sufferers of asbestos disease through home and hospital visits, phone support and meetings between members;
-
ensures people diagnosed with an asbestos related disease receive the best medical and legal advice;
-
has an established network of members, social workers, doctors and nurses to whom the Society can direct sufferers of asbestos disease;
-
meets and consults with government members and members of the health profession to ensure sufferers of asbestos disease receive the best possible care and treatment;
-
has regular contact with similar support organizations in Australia;
-
hosts an Ecumenical Service each year in Brisbane on National Asbestos Awareness Day to provide some comfort to members;
-
provides support to sufferers of asbestos disease, their families, friends and carers;
-
has a strong and active advocacy service with all levels of government to ensure the rights and entitlements of all asbestos disease sufferers;
-
actively pursue governments to enact legislation for the safe removal and disposal of asbestos from our community;
-
actively promotes asbestos awareness programs to all levels of the community;
-
promotes the continuation of research into early diagnosis, better treatment and ultimately, a cure for asbestos related diseases.
